The Coordinated Science Laboratory is looking for an Associate Director for Research to work within The Center for Networked Intelligent Components and Environments (C-NICE) at the University of Illinois. C-NICE serves as a global hub for the smart, reconfigurable technology that will drive the manufacturing plants, medical environments, autonomous vehicles and smart homes of the future. The Associate Director for Research will be responsible for identifying, developing, integrating for the Center for Networked Intelligent Components and Environments (C-NICE) and managing research initiatives, coordinating new interdisciplinary proposals, and facilitating current research programs.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Develops and implements strategic plans for research under the guidance of the Director.
  • Facilitates the establishment of relationships with FIT USRD (Foxconn Interconnect Technology - US Research and Development), FIT Business Units, corporations, foundations, and government agencies.
  • Steers the creation and coordination of research project proposals.
  • Provides leadership, works with faculty, and supports personnel to develop, coordinate, and maintain interdisciplinary research initiatives and team building.
  • Liaises with Sponsored Programs Administration (SPA), Office of Technology Management (OTM), Coordinated Science Laboratory and Grainger College of Engineering departments, and other key offices as needed to support C-NICE in establishing funding and collaborations for research.
  • Develops and maintains mechanisms for sharing research information and research products with the sponsor, including mechanisms for facilitating export control review and acting as a liaison to Export Control Office and Institutional Review Board as required
  • Serves as a member of the C-NICE's leadership team representing the Director and other research leaders in matters affecting C-NICE's research programs.
  • Understands and identifies funding and collaborative opportunities for research and matches these to researchers associated with C-NICE.
  • Facilitates the assembly and support of research teams in response to large research project proposal opportunities.
  • Coordinates interactions with campus administration involved in research project proposal submissions.
  • Tracks and advises on annual expenditures including developing and executing an annual budget and reviewing and approving long-term financial forecasts.
  • Plans, organizes, hosts, and facilitates visits by external FIT research partners and potential partners. Assists in planning, organizing, and hosting workshops.
  • Travels occasionally within the U.S. and abroad.
  • Represents C-NICE on campus-wide committees relating to research policy development, research administration, and research planning.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.


Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, science, business administration, or related field.
  • Two years of experience in a research administration environment.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's or Doctoral degree in engineering, science, or related field.
  • Four or more years of experience in a research administration environment.
  • Experience in project management, developing research proposals, and interacting with federal agencies and corporations.
  • Ability to converse effectively regarding technical/scientific topics.
  • SPARC training

  • Excellent detail-oriented and organizational skills to operate effectively in a fast-paced, multifaceted work environment.
  • Strong interpersonal and excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to understand engineering and/or scientific research programs.

Appointment Information
This is a 100% full-time Academic Professional position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after May 19, 2024. The minimum salary is $92,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications.

The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
